The Chippenham constituency and wider Wiltshire has a large population of military veterans who sometimes feel isolated and suffer from mental health problems. In addition to recent announcements by the Ministry of Defence in this area, today I asked the Defence Minister what more can be done to reassure my constituents.
He recognised the importance of the issue of looking after our veterans, particularly those who are homeless or who feel isolated. The Secretary of State has moved forward with a 24/7 helpline (0800 323 4444) to support people and also a new veteran’s strategy that will be announced in November. He also highlighted the importance of the role local councils play in looking after veterans with an armed forces champion – Wiltshire Council’s is David Wood who I will arrange a meeting with soon to discuss the work being done locally.
