Spending a day shadowing a carer in Chippenham

I recently spent some time shadowing a carer in the Chippenham constituency to help me fully understand the challenges in the industry and gain an ‘on the ground’ insight into the life of a carer and the people they care for.

I am passionate about raising the status of carers in society. I have highlighted a number of issues within the sector including pay, recruitment, retention and pressures on carers.

Through my work as a Member of Parliament I have always attempted to highlight the fantastic local charities that we have in the constituency who support voluntary carers including Carer Support Wiltshire and Fun For All. As an Ambassador for the Independent Living Centre, Semington I really do want to help enable more people to live at home as long as possible

Carers play an invaluable role in our society, they care for the most vulnerable and in need. We need to support them more and shout about the work they do in order to raise the status of the profession. We need to think about a range of care models and come together cross-party to ensure that the most vulnerable in our society always get the quality of care that they deserve.
