From 2022-2023 I was the Secretary of State covering Sport. A key part of my work was to deliver a new football regulator to protect clubs from abuse by unscrupulous owners who get away with financial mismanagement, which can destroy clubs.
Football is one of our greatest sources of national pride and we are taking decisive action to protect the beautiful game 
Following our fan-led review, we have introduced plans that will:
Ensure new owners and directors will face strong tests to stop clubs falling into the wrong hands.
A new 'Independent Football Regulator', independent of Government and the football authorities, will be enshrined in law.
Fans will be back at the heart of clubs and will have to agree before key off-field decisions, such as changes to club colours or badge, are taken.
English clubs will be prevented from joining breakaway European Super League, which undermine in English game.
I am so proud that this has finally become a reality, as I truly believe it'll be for the long term benefit of football clubs and communities up and down the country
