I meet regularly with farmers and food producers across the constituency and something that comes up every time is food labelling. It needs to be clearer and allow consumers to make informed choices about their food. During a recent visit to Stonegate Farmers in Lacock I heard about statistics from Waitrose showing what a difference clearly identifying methods of production for eggs made to what eggs people bought.
I wrote to the Secretary of State for DEFRA to share what I had been told and ask what more can be done and recently at the Oxford Farming Conference Environment Secretary, Steve Barclay, announced measures to improve transparency in food labelling and make sure high-quality British food stands out from the crowd.
This will enable consumers to make informed decisions, while backing British farmers producing food to world-leading standards of taste, quality and animal welfare.
It includes highlighting when imported products do not meet UK welfare standards.
The Environment Secretary will also speak with major online retailers to identify ways to better support online customers to understand the origin of their food products including the option of a Buy British Button.
