This morning I asked the Energy Minister about support for the green energy sector and local businesses such as Good Energy as Feed-in Tariffs are reformed.
I have concerns that if Feed-in-Tariffs are all withdrawn at the same time it may have a significant impact on small and medium sized energy companies who have not been given enough notice before FITs are withdrawn. This could impact on local jobs and the energy market in general.
The solar industry certainly does need some rationalisation, but a drop of up to 87% in subsidies overnight is more than I suspect the industry can bear. I asked Ministers to look again at what more could be done to support existing projects and for a mechanism that keeps the solar industry alive until grid parity is reached – which is anticipated to be within this parliament – allows domestic installations to continue, at a steady or reduced rate, and encourages commercial and community rooftop installations, especially where the power will be used on site.
